One definite recommendation: Remove the upper (fill) plug on the rear differential before removing the lower drain plug. The plugs often are very difficult to remove, especially if the gear oil hasn't been changed in a long time. You don't want to remove the lower one first (oil drains out) and then find the upper one is seized in place.

Yesterday there was a puddle under the driver's front tire. After inspection I believe it is heavy weight oil. I noticed an area around the axle and differential looked like it may have had a small leak for some time but was gumming up with road grime. I grabbed the axle and there was a pretty fair amount of play where it enters the case.

Use the best stuff you can in your trans. Just drain & change the external spin on filter. Allison says no need to change the internal filter ...The diff has a aluminum housing i believe. The passenger side mount is also aluminum. The mount that is on top of the diff has bolt on brackets that will replace that mount. When people lift the trucks they have to cut the top mount off.
